HOPE: want something to happen or be the case
WISH: feel or express a strong desire or hope for something that is not easily attainable; want something that cannot or probably will not happen
These are the definitions for two words that I hear all the time from people usually said in the context of improving their jobs, relationships, and lives. I truly believe there is a time for wishing and hoping. Times like fighting rare diseases, trying to avoid natural disaster, escaping war torn areas, and overcoming random acts of violence.
Where I absolutely do not believe the word HOPE and WISH belong is in place of WORK. I do not personally know anyone who does not want more in life and from their lives. What I do see are people who talk about it more than they act upon it! Imagine if we added the word WORK to both those definitions what kind of mental change and picture we would create:
WORK for something to happen or be the case
WORK for something that is not easily attainable; WORK for something that cannot or probably will not happen
The simple change of a word allows us to take charge, feel empowered, and realize we are in fact in total control of how hard we work. If we want real change, to make a real difference, to leave a real impact let us not keep HOPING and WISHING for it more than we are willing to WORK for it!
If you are just getting started working towards substantial change here are some simple tips we have use to make the change more manageable and likely to succeed:
– Set short term goals
– Put deadlines on things
– Take inventory of yourself when you start making excuses for why it won’t work or can wait
– Decide to take action on small things in your life
– Share your vision, ideas, successes, and shortcomings with someone who is on the path to where you want to be or has already arrived there
– If you stumble, come up short, or don’t reach a goal, pick yourself up, dust yourself off and get back to work the next day!
