Confidence Drill Safety Tips

According to news reports the fallen officer died during training scenarios in which he was grappling with another officer.

I do not know all the details to this situation but I thought it was important to remind us all of safety measures especially during our confidence drills:

1. Drills should only be done with coaches pushing students never student versus student
2. Confidence drills lead to student confidence not instructor domination
3. Short in duration with desired outcome known by coaches before drill begins
4. At conclusion of practice after skills have been successfully completed in less dynamic application
5. Students must be properly warmed up for drills (do not go from low level heart rate right to dynamic without preparing their bodies)
6. Adjust to the physical limits (injury, shape) of each student
7. If in doubt, dial things back! We can always train again another day.
