This past week I had the opportunity to be one of the first presenters at a regional fire academy basic recruit class made up of 17 firefighters from three states and six different agencies.     My job was to set the tone for their upcoming academy by speaking to them about developing, refining, and living a warrior life.  It has been three years since I was first ask to fill the gap in their training by addressing the need for mental toughness and spiritual preparation in addition to all of their required physical skills.  It is a responsibility I’ve never taken lightly and know first hand the impact it can make in the student’s life.

I have delivered this talk and similar talks to my law enforcement audiences over the past 20 years and enjoy the challenge of delivering the message to our fire fighting partners in a manner that makes sense to them.  Their profession is a very structured discipline with well defined command, control, and procedures.  There is much less gray area and individual discretion than we are accustomed to in law enforcement.

So I took my message and broke it down into five steps that seem simple on the surface level, yet require internal honesty and truthfulness to be highly effective:

1.WHY?  –  Identifying the real purpose we are called to these lines of work.

2.BELIEVE  – Creating indomitable self belief, positive self talk, and attracting like minded individuals

3.PREPARE – Physical, Emotional, Spiritual readiness for the world we are about to see

4.SELF ASSESS  –  Taking an honest inventory of our strengths and weaknesses not only professionally but in our personal lives as well

5.GROW – Avoid the “complacency box” where we only do what we are good at

It is truly an honor to be able to share my thoughts, ideas, and experiences with the next generation of warriors.  I look forward to speaking with many other groups to share with them how developing our Warrior Mindset will help us create happier, healthier, and more productive lives.  This class is perfect for any small business, non profit, or athletic team looking to go to the next level.
