Adult Learning Concepts Apply to Use of Force Training

Are we using proven adult learning methodology in our use of force training?

In law enforcement training we tend to over train the physical domain of our students.  More reps!  More time doing more reps! Is a frequent message from trainers to struggling students.

What if the issue does not lie in the physical domain of learning.   More reps can be defeating, discouraging, and create a total loss of confidence by the student.

Did we stop to evaluate how the student's feel about the skills, tactics, or topic at hand?

This is where the affective domain sneaks into impacting performance, through a nasty four letter word....FEAR!

Next time you are training someone who is struggling, after they have demonstrated the cognitive knowledge of the topic, shown competency in the physical skills, ask them, "what are you afraid of".

You might be shocked at the answer and unlock the key to performance!
